The Fraternité hospital was born out of a surge of popular solidarity in 1903, and illustrates an innovative approach to healthcare: its pavilion architecture, designed for ventilation and isolation, reflects the major medical advances of the early 20th century. Connected by underground galleries that are now inaccessible, the pavilions housed separate men, women and children around gardens used by patients.
